1. CALL TO CHOREOGRAPHERS

Deadline: Monday, February 25th - 11:59pm
Send your proposal to: sachi@duskdances.ca

Dusk Dances is inviting applications for dance works to be presented at Dusk Dances Withrow Park, in Toronto, from August 4 -11, 2019, or for its 2020 season.

We are specifically looking for proposals for a remount/re-imagination/adaptation of an already existing work.  We will not consider applications for commissions or for new works still in development at this time.  Dusk Dances mostly presents dance works that are ten (10) minutes in length.

Artists and Companies from Ontario, and from outside of Ontario, can apply.

Dusk Dances is an outdoor dance festival that brings high quality contemporary and traditional dance to public parks. As dusk descends, a theatrical host leads the audience - which invariably includes children, dog walkers and local residents - to eclectic dance pieces that unfold in different areas of the park.

Choreographers from various backgrounds are invited to perform a ten (10)-minute piece inspired by the park’s natural environment. Audiences are invited on a pay-what-you-can basis to an innovative site-specific festival, which is not only an artistic event but a social and cultural one as well.  2019 will mark Dusk Dances’ 25th anniversary and the season is programmed by Festival Director Sylvie Bouchard.

Applicants must:

- have recently presented a minimum of three (3) choreographic works.
- be a professional dance artist, who is a citizen or permanent resident of Canada.

*We will not accept proposals from students currently enrolled in a post-secondary college, university or conservatory institution.

Please provide the following information and support material:

- contact information (name, address, phone, email, website);
- a biography, which includes information about your choreographic experience (recent works, residencies, commissions, awards, etc.);
- a one-paragraph piece description of the proposed work;
- a short paragraph re: your previous experience with creating works in site-specific venues, highlighting any outdoor presentations;
- a brief statement, describing your interest in adapting this proposed work for a 10-minute presentation in an outdoor setting, and how you will accomplish this;
- an online link to a full-version of your proposed work.*

*If you are proposing an excerpt of a longer work, please submit the full-length video, and identify the section (s) that you plan to remount (include time code markers).

*Please do not include additional video documentation for other choreographic works - we will only view video of your proposed work.

*Applications must be submitted as one (1) pdf or Word file

Dusk Dances provides:

- a presentation fee;
- travel/accommodation/per-diem - for out-of-town artists only;
- outside eye services from the Festival Director Sylvie Bouchard;
- all logistics for the festival;
- technical personnel and equipment (including microphones and sound systems);
- marketing and publicity (posters, postcards, newsletters, social media, house programs).

Dusk Dances is an equal-opportunities employer. We encourage applications from all cultures and backgrounds, with specific attention to marginalized communities.

If you have any questions regading your submission, please email Sachi Otsuka at sachi@duskdances.ca . All applicants will be contacted.

3. Future seasons

If you would like to apply to Dusk Dances as a choreographer for future seasons, please send us a proposal that includes:

. A description of your piece
. A CV
. Support material (DVD, VHS, Youtube)

Choreographers can apply to adapt an existing piece to a park environment. If you are applying in this category, please include the piece you would like to remount in your support material.

Choreographers can also apply for the commission of a new work. If you are applying in this category, please include as much information as you can in your piece description (number of dancers, music, site, theme, etc.) Please note that it is always preferable to include a variety of pieces in your support material. This allows us to get to know you as a choreographer.

Programming is normally completed a year and a half in advance, with commissioned works being submitted for our grant proposals in the fall, for the following summer’s festival. (ie. we submit our grant proposals in fall 2018 for the 2019 festival).

We encourage you to see the event before applying, and to let curator Sylvie Bouchard know about your upcoming performances.

If you would like to apply as an opening band, or opening group (live music and dance), please send us support material as well as a description of your proposed half an hour opening act.

If you would like to apply as a host, please contact Sylvie Bouchard directly by e-mail.
