Music: Zigeunerlieder (Gypsy-Songs), OP. 103: No. 8. Horch, Der Wind Klagt In Den Zweigen

This piece is one of three short works originally commissioned by the King Edward Choir for a performance at Collier Street United Church in 2015. The breath rhythm of the movement was designed to match that of the choral singing.

Bios of local artists and local organizations


Scott Hurst



A multi-disciplined theatre artist now living in Barrie, Scott has spent over 40 years working professionally across Canada. In 2009 he received a Barrie Arts Awards for Excellence in the Arts. Favorite gigs include seasons at the Stratford Festival, an engagement in Moscow, Russia performing in 42nd Street, and two Christmas Pantos at Toronto’s Elgin Theatre with Ross Petty. This past summer he revived his solo show Laughton Common for Theatre Collingwood’s Porch Side Festival and he just returned from Stratford where he directed Andrew Prashad’s One Step At A Time in the new Tom Patterson Theatre (Lazardis Hall).




Sarah Lochhead



Sarah Lochhead is a dance artist, educator, advocate and arts administrator who is passionate about the role dance plays in both personal development and community building. She is the Founder/Artistic Director of Simcoe Contemporary Dancers, a not-for-profit professional dance company based in Barrie (Ontario) established in 2009. She led as Artistic Director for 10 years. During her tenure, SCD received the Barrie Arts Award for Contribution to the Community (2017).

Most recently Sarah facilitated a creative process for In the time before the immediate present and the time immediately to follow (2019) as part of Simcoe Contemporary Dancers’ 10th Anniversary Simcoe County tour. Sarah holds a BFA honours and MA in Dance Studies from York University. Her artistic and academic work has been acknowledged through a Top Paper Citation award from the National Dance Educators Organization (USA) and grants from the City of Barrie, the Ontario Arts Council, the Canada Council for the Arts, and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. Her work Brahm’s Zigeunerlieder (2015) will be remounted as part of SCD’s 2021/2022 season. You can follow Sarah’s creative projects @choreoCode on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter.





Sydney Whittaker



Sydney Whittaker joined Simcoe Contemporary Dancers (SCD) as a Junior Apprentice in 2017 after participating in our inaugural Dusk Dances Barrie Festival as part of our community-engaged piece. She has recently graduated from Bear Creek Secondary School and will be continuing her education in the Fall. Sydney is also excited to continue working with SCD as a company member! Since joining SCD, Sydney has learned a variety of pieces from the company repertoire and performed in a variety of performance venues.









Alyssa Bart is a singer-songwriter from Barrie, ON with a mission to help people escape from the crazy world with her music. Alyssa is a strong advocate for supporting local and is currently working with Barrie’s local theatre company, Theatre By The Bay. She studies classical voice at Western University and hopes to share her love for music with those around her. You can check out her debut single on all streaming platforms and follow her journey on social media @alyssabart_.









Courtney is a Canadian singer / songwriter who sings multi-genre and accompanies herself with either Piano, Mandolin or Acoustic Guitar. Courtney has accomplished a lot in her short 3-year live music career. She has had the opportunity to showcase four of her originals on Country 89s Morning Show Friday Live with Rob & Megan, accompanied by her guitarist Graham Unsted, charted #4 and #11 in 2019 with 2 of her singles off her debut EP on True North Country Radio Station and performed as a guest on a Norwegian Cruise Ship. She has also performed her original music at the Geneva Event Center in Orillia, The Madi Centre for the Performing Arts in Barrie, Oshawa City Hall and traveled down to play Pride in the Park for Pride Niagara Summer of 2017 and opened for CHI CHI DEVAYNE, one of the fabulous Queens on Rue Paul.









Nicole Fleshin is a singer-songwriter from Bradford, Ontario. Her edgy and energetic repertoire pulls strongly from both pop, and rock genres. As a member of the Canadian Musicians Co-operative Inc., Nicole discovered her artist brand and identity through the Summer Emerging Artists Program. Ready to hit the stage as COVID-19 restrictions are lifted and live performances are allowed again, Nicole is excited to share her music, and her story.









Kyle Morris is a singer-songwriter from Carrot River, Saskatchewan, currently living in Barrie, Ontario. Frequently compared to both Michael Bublé and John Mayer, his easy-listening adult-contemporary repertoire pulls strongly from both jazz and blues genres, blended with the driving intensity of rock. Silky smooth vocals and boundless charm, coupled with his love for storytelling are captured in his recent album “With Life You’ll Never Know” (November 2019). Currently, Kyle is excited to be back performing live to share his music and stories.

The Emerging Artist Program gives local artists the opportunity to perform in their communities and attend workshops/training education, supporting them in building sustainable careers intersecting the music industry in the 21st century.
